Family Guide to Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts: Where to Ski & Snowboard with Kids

There is no shortage of places to ski around Lake Tahoe, but when you’re bringing kids along, choosing the right mountain can make a HUGE difference.

Is there beginner-friendly terrain? Where can kids take lessons? Is it an easy day trip from Sacramento, or is this a resort where you’ll want to stay a few nights? And perhaps most importantly when you’re hauling kids and all their snow gear around: how complicated is it to actually get from the car to the mountain?

We put together this guide with help from Amber of @brunettetahoette, a Tahoe local who also knows these mountains well. We’re sharing some of our favorite family-friendly ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, plus helpful tips for choosing the right one for your family.

A quick note before you go: Mountain conditions, lesson programs, prices, parking requirements and operating dates can change throughout the season. Always check the resort’s website before leaving home, especially after a storm.

Drive distances below are approximate from Sacramento and can vary depending on your starting point, traffic, weather and winter road conditions.

Northstar California

📍 5001 Northstar Drive, Truckee, CA 96161
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 110 miles
🗺️ Area: North Lake Tahoe / Truckee
🏆 Great for: A complete family ski vacation

Northstar is one of the easiest resorts to recommend when a family wants more than simply a day of skiing. The Village at Northstar gives you restaurants, shops and activities all in one place, while the mountain offers plenty of terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.

Northstar’s children’s programs currently include skiing and snowboarding for ages 3–14, with half- and full-day options varying by age. Children’s lessons meet right in Northstar Village next to the skating rink.

Family tip

If your child needs rental equipment for a lesson, Northstar recommends arriving 60 minutes before lesson time. If they already have their equipment, arrive at least 30 minutes ahead. Better yet, the resort recommends picking up rental equipment the day before when possible.

Where to stay

Staying in The Village at Northstar is especially convenient with kids because you can eliminate a lot of the morning driving and parking hassle. Northstar offers village condos, private homes, Timber Creek Lodge and other resort lodging. For a splurge, The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe offers ski-in/ski-out access at mid-mountain. Another high-end stay with ski in/ski out access is Constellation Luxury Residences with onsite ski valet.

*INSIDER TIP: Beginner-friendly gondola access makes getting to the learning terrain easier with kids.

Sierra-at-Tahoe

📍 1111 Sierra-at-Tahoe Road, Twin Bridges, CA 95735
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 90 miles
🗺️ Area: South Tahoe region
🏆 Great for: Younger kids, beginners and Sacramento day trips

Sierra-at-Tahoe is one of our favorites for families who are learning. It’s located off Highway 50 about 12 miles west of South Lake Tahoe, which also makes it convenient for Sacramento-area families who don’t necessarily want to drive all the way into the Tahoe Basin.

The resort has dedicated children’s programs broken down by age and ability, including programs beginning with preschool-age children. Sierra also has beginner-friendly learning terrain, and families who want a break from skiing and snowboarding can check out Blizzard Mountain for tubing and snow play when it’s operating.

Family tip

For 2026–27, Sierra is introducing parking reservations on weekends and holiday periods. Reservations are free for passholders and vehicles with four or more people. Check the current parking rules before heading up.

If your child is enrolled in a Wild Mountain youth lesson, the resort says the learning center has reserved parking for participating families at the top of D Lot until 9:30 a.m.

Where to stay

There isn’t a traditional destination village at Sierra, so for an overnight trip we’d look for lodging along the Highway 50 corridor or in South Lake Tahoe. That also gives you restaurants and other family activities after skiing.

INSIDER TIP: Easy parking and slope access make this one especially convenient with kids and an easy day trip from Sacramento.

Diamond Peak Ski Resort

📍 1210 Ski Way, Incline Village, NV 89451
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 135 miles
🗺️ Area: North Lake Tahoe
🏆 Great for: Kids learning to ski or snowboard

Diamond Peak is a smaller resort in Incline Village, and that manageable size can be a major plus when you’re skiing with kids. The resort has gentle progression terrain and separate children’s and youth lesson programs. Kids ages 3–6 are served through the Child Ski & Ride Center, while youth programming covers ages 7–12.

And then there are the views. Diamond Peak sits directly above Incline Village, so families get some gorgeous views over Lake Tahoe.

Family tip

Lessons should be booked in advance, and Diamond Peak requires a parent to remain at the resort while a child is participating in a lesson. On busy periods, the resort recommends arriving as much as two hours before a lesson if you also need rentals.

Diamond Peak also operates a free ski shuttle around Incline Village during ski season, which can make staying nearby especially convenient.

Where to stay

Incline Village is your best bet. The resort lists several nearby lodging partners; The Incline Lodge is about 1.5 miles away and has access to the free ski shuttle. The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe is another family-friendly Incline Village option with winter shuttle connectivity to Diamond Peak.

INSIDER TIP: Great for little ones, plus they offer a Parent Interchangeable Ticket so parents can take turns skiing while the other stays with the kids.

Heavenly Mountain Resort

📍 California Lodge: 3860 Saddle Road, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150
📍 Heavenly Village Gondola: 4080 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 105 miles
🗺️ Area: South Lake Tahoe
🏆 Great for: Combining skiing with a full Tahoe family vacation

Heavenly is very different from some of the smaller mountains on this list. It’s a massive destination resort spanning California and Nevada, with multiple base areas.

For families, one of its biggest advantages is location. Stay in South Lake Tahoe and you can combine your ski days with restaurants, shopping and other activities without making the entire vacation revolve around skiing.

The Heavenly Village Gondola also puts mountain access right in the middle of South Lake Tahoe. However, families should pay close attention to where their lessons actually meet because Heavenly has multiple access points.

Family tip

Don’t simply type “Heavenly” into your GPS on lesson morning. Check your confirmation and identify your exact meeting location first.

California Lodge has rentals, tickets, dining and Ski & Ride School services, making it a useful base for families who need several things in one place.

Where to stay

For convenience, stay around Heavenly Village or Stateline. You’ll have restaurants and activities within walking distance and easy access to the Heavenly Village Gondola.

INSIDER TIP: The beginner area has a fun magic carpet, and the nearby tubing hill makes it easy to mix skiing with snow play.

Homewood Mountain Resort

📍 5145 West Lake Blvd., Homewood, CA 96141
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 115 miles
🗺️ Area: West Shore of Lake Tahoe
🏆 Great for: A smaller mountain experience with incredible lake views

Homewood is unique because the mountain rises almost directly from Lake Tahoe’s West Shore. It’s one of those places where the scenery is part of the experience.

Homewood operated during the 2025–26 season and is currently preparing for 2026–27, including construction of a new eight-passenger gondola. As of September 2026, construction is underway and the resort says it plans to reopen for winter.

Homewood also confirms that its ski products and day tickets are available to the general public when mountain operations are open.

Family tip

Because Homewood is undergoing significant changes, this is one resort where I’d definitely check the website shortly before your trip for the latest lift, lesson and parking information.

The West Shore also feels very different from South Lake Tahoe or Northstar. It’s quieter and more residential, which families may love if they want a relaxed Tahoe weekend.

Where to stay

Look around Homewood, Tahoma or Tahoe City. A vacation rental can work particularly well here for families who want a kitchen and extra room for wet snow gear.

INSIDER TIP: One of the best beginner slopes for full Lake Tahoe views, plus a smaller, more laid-back feel.

Sugar Bowl Resort

📍 629 Sugar Bowl Road, Norden, CA 95724
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 90 miles
🗺️ Area: Donner Summit
🏆 Great for: First-timers and Sacramento day trips

Sugar Bowl is one of the closest major Tahoe-area resorts to Sacramento — the resort itself estimates about 90 minutes from Sacramento under normal conditions.

For families learning together, Sugar Bowl has dedicated learning zones and children’s ski and snowboard lessons for ages 4–12. One detail parents of younger kids may especially appreciate: group sizes for ages 4–6 are limited to three students. Snowboard group lessons currently begin at age 7.

Family tip

Lessons frequently sell out on weekends and holidays, so this isn’t one we’d leave until the morning of your trip. Sugar Bowl recommends reservations in advance.

The Main Lodge also has a short drop zone where families can unload people and gear before parking — a small detail that can be VERY helpful when you’re carrying skis, boots and everything else kids somehow need for one day in the snow.

Where to stay

For maximum convenience, The Lodge at Sugar Bowl is slopeside. The resort also offers private residences in its snowbound village.

INSIDER TIP: The beginner chairlift sits low to the ground, which can make that first chairlift experience less intimidating for kids.

Boreal Mountain California + Woodward Tahoe

📍 19749 Boreal Ridge Road, Soda Springs, CA 95728
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 90 miles
🗺️ Area: Donner Summit
🏆 Great for: Beginners, day trips and kids who want more than skiing

Boreal is right off I-80 on Donner Summit, making it one of the most straightforward options for families coming from Sacramento.

Its smaller footprint can also make a first ski or snowboard day feel less overwhelming than starting at one of Tahoe’s huge destination resorts. Boreal has beginner terrain near the base, terrain parks and night skiing.

The big bonus for families is Woodward Tahoe, Boreal’s action-sports facility. That gives families another activity beyond traditional skiing and snowboarding.

Family tip

This is one I’d consider for a family’s first few ski days or when you want to make skiing a day trip instead of a full Tahoe vacation.

Because Boreal is directly off I-80, you also don’t have to continue down into the Tahoe Basin after crossing Donner Summit.

Where to stay

For an overnight, look around Soda Springs, Donner Summit or Truckee. Families skiing multiple resorts could also use Truckee as a base.

Boreal Mountain California + Woodward Tahoe

INSIDER TIP: Woodward’s indoor action-sports facility gives little kids something fun to do off the slopes and is great for birthday parties, too.

Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe

📍 22222 Mt. Rose Highway, Reno, NV 89511
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 145 miles
🗺️ Area: Reno–Tahoe / near North Lake Tahoe
🏆 Great for: Families staying in Reno and beginner lessons

Mt. Rose sits on Highway 431 between Reno and Incline Village. It’s about 25 miles from downtown Reno and 11 miles from North Lake Tahoe.

For families with beginners, Mt. Rose has a particularly convenient setup: its children’s learning terrain is right by the Main Lodge. Parents can even watch from a viewing area while kids are learning.

Current half-day children’s lessons include the lesson, rental equipment and an all-day lift ticket. Ski lessons are offered for ages 4–12 and snowboard lessons for ages 7–12.

Family tip

This is a good resort to consider if you’d rather stay in Reno, where you’ll generally have a much larger selection of hotels, restaurants and indoor entertainment.

Mt. Rose also has free slope-side parking, avoiding the village/shuttle process you’ll encounter at some larger Tahoe resorts.

Where to stay

I’d stay in south Reno or Incline Village, depending on the rest of your trip. Reno gives you more hotel choices; Incline Village keeps you closer to Lake Tahoe.

INSIDER TIP: Known for comparatively affordable lift-ticket options, making it worth checking for budget-conscious families.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort

📍 1501 Kirkwood Meadows Drive, Kirkwood, CA 95646
🚗 From Sacramento: approximately 100 miles
🗺️ Area: South Tahoe region
🏆 Great for: Ski-focused families and families ready to progress

Kirkwood has a reputation for serious mountain terrain, but that doesn’t mean families should automatically cross it off their list.

The resort offers children’s lessons for skiing and snowboarding, including programs for ages 3–4 and 5–14.

Compared with staying in South Lake Tahoe, Kirkwood feels much more like a trip where the mountain itself is the destination. That can be great for families who really want to ski rather than build a trip around shopping and other attractions.

Family tip

Pay close attention to winter driving directions. Kirkwood specifically warns that Mormon Emigrant Trail is closed during winter, even though navigation apps may try to route you that way. Check road conditions and use the resort’s recommended winter route.

For lessons, Kirkwood recommends arriving 60 minutes early if you need rentals and 30 minutes early if you already have equipment.

Where to stay

Staying right at Kirkwood Village is easiest with kids. Kirkwood has on-mountain lodging ranging from hotel-style accommodations to condos and townhomes, including properties within walking distance of the lifts.

INSIDER TIP: A fun option for families wanting to try Nordic skiing together, including parents with little ones and dogs.

Tips for Skiing & Snowboarding Lake Tahoe With Kids

The biggest thing we’ve learned about skiing with kids is that convenience matters almost as much as the mountain. A resort with a slightly smaller trail network but easy parking, nearby bathrooms and a simple learning area may make for a much happier first day than a huge mountain requiring shuttles, long walks and multiple gondola rides.

Book children’s lessons early, especially for weekends and school holidays. Give yourself considerably more time than you think you’ll need in the morning, label everything your child takes to ski school, and keep an extra pair of gloves and socks in the car.

Also check road conditions immediately before leaving. Tahoe winter driving times can change dramatically during storms, and the approximate Sacramento distances in this guide should never be treated as winter travel-time guarantees.

And don’t feel like your kids need to spend eight hours skiing to make the trip worthwhile. A successful first day might be a lesson, a few family runs, hot chocolate and calling it quits while everyone is still having fun.

Which Tahoe ski resort is right for your family?

For younger kids and first-timers, start by looking closely at the lesson programs and learning areas at Sierra-at-Tahoe, Diamond Peak, Sugar Bowl, Northstar, Boreal and Mt. Rose. For a full vacation where you want restaurants and other activities around you, Northstar and Heavenly offer a very different experience. Families primarily interested in mountain time may prefer Kirkwood, while Homewood gives you that classic West Shore setting and lake views.

There isn’t one perfect Tahoe mountain for every family. The best choice depends on your kids’ ages, whether they’re skiing or snowboarding, their experience level, how far you want to drive and whether you’re planning a day trip or an entire Tahoe getaway.
